Food Photography served:
I confess: food photography is not my turf.
This being said, sometimes I enjoy the freshness of having herbs that smells awesome in front of my lens, beautiful colors from mother Nature that literally come to life under decent lighting, and finally a touch of human art in decorating the stage make things fun.
Storytelling:
Perhaps the most fun working on this 'once-in-a-while' genere at my studio, is collaborating with food stylist.
The storytelling of the image is in facts mostly about choosing and staging props in a way that boosts visual dimensions.
Color harmonies:
An other asset to consider very carefully in food photography is color. Color harmonies can greatly contribute to the image's flavors, contrast and clarity.
Details Suggesting motion:
Shooting motion in food photography is not rare nor uncommon. However, sometimes including actions could result too distracting or unnecessary for the project. So is the case where we go for my favorite solution leaving some elements to simply allude or imply actions. A few seeds or ingredients remains can serve the effect of motion and action in a slightly muted way and yet stacking up to the image visual story.
Composition:
Finding balance in composition is essential to an eye pleasing image.
Balance is the leading concept when composing elements in the canvas.
Interestingly enough, where no tension is build, there is no need of balance.
These two counterbalancing concepts are the forces for the composition game.
Then we add leading lines, spice it up with some perspective and serve.
Lighting:
Lighting seems to be an other key ingredient for tasty food photography.
The mood board for this project required a generally bright atmosphere and low contrast ratios to better match the vegetarian choice of the client. Consistency through the series was also a distinct requirement so I kept a soft key pretty soft and steady and followed the line making limited adjustments to the backlights and fill, depending on the composition and plates.
Retouch work:
Retouch work came as icing on a cake.
A bit of careful reshape has occasionally push back in a few preparation melts. Other minor preparation flaws have been cleared out during a regular image cleaning.
Other than that, being sufficiently happy with the shot as in-camera, the retouch work has been as fun as limited to some color adjustments to make some tones a bit more vibrant.
Comments appreciated, thanks for watching.
